  1. Covering one’s naked chest in honey is an old tradition, signifying readiness to accept undeserved punishment in solidarity with one’s comrades. It goes back to Tsotne Dadiani who galloped all the way from the Ghado pas to Ani in Armenia, where he surrendered to the Mongols in 1246 and joined other Georgian prisoners who’d been left naked, covered in honey, to be devoured by ants. Tsotne so amazed the Mongols with his selflessness that the Mongol Khan Arghun released all the suspect Georgian conspirators.

  2. Regarding TAM, its runway was indeed bombed in 2008. The runway is to the south of the main airport’s, across the back road to Rustavi, apparently it is used for test flights etc. You can see it just to the left of the railway station here: https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=tbilisi+airport&ie=UTF-8&ei=0AdXUcfjMsnMPaPxgbgJ&ved=0CAsQ_AUoAg

Bagrati cathedral is also a bit more complex, I understand that it was initially the idea of the Patriarchate to rebuild it, but was brushed aside by Misha on the advice of some fairly well known heavy hitters. Misha then figured it could be a good way of scoring some nationalist/orthodox points and went ahead. The original roof was blown off in an Ottoman invasion in 1692 and, as you may have guessed, there is no reliable information about what it actually looked like…
